Thomas Smith, Jr.

Thomas Sherwin Smith, Jr. , 77, of Gibsonia, formerly of Philadelphia, PA, died Tuesday, September 14, 2021 in the Good Samaritan Hospice Center, Wexford, PA. He was born November 21, 1943, in Philadelphia, PA, a son of the late Thomas Sherwin Smith, Sr. and Catherine (Walker) Smith.  Prior to working as a prison guard in Philadelphia, Tom was a police officer and then rose to the rank of Chief of Police for the Medford Lakes Police Department. He served as President of the Burlington County Chiefs Association. In retirement, Tom loved spending time with his grandchildren, fishing and gardening. He was an avid Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles fan. He loved hanging out with his buddies at the O.T.B. betting on the horses. Tom was a friend to everyone he met.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Rebecca (Bowles) Smith, daughter, Sally Smith-Ness, brothers, Michael Smith and Robert Smith.  He is survived by four children, Terri Billhimer (Joe) of Gibsonia and their children, Joey, Anthony and Carley, Tara Meleones (Peter) of Long Beach, MS and their children, Allison and Erin, Dan Smith (Jen) of Gettysburg, Kristan Polsgrove of Cooperstown, NY, grandson, Alexander Smith-Ness; six siblings, Maryellen Howard of Philadelphia, Peggy Potere, Jack Smith (Joanne), Steven Smith, Paul Smith, all of NJ and Beth Martinez of CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.  A Visitation for Thomas will be held Saturday, September 18, 2021 beginning at 12 PM with a Memorial Service at 1 PM at the Lechner Funeral Home, 24 N.
