Robert D. Pomponi, 87, of Greensburg, died Friday, Jan. 8, 2016, at home. He was born Sept. 18, 1928, in South Greensburg, a son of the late Alex and Mary Gorirossi Pomponi. Bob was a retired installer for the former Bell Telephone and was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church. In his younger years, he served as the Scoutmaster of Troop No. 442 in Hannastown for 30 years and was also a volunteer for the American Red Cross and the Disaster Unit, along with his pal, Jack Brigaman. He was a Navy veteran, having served during the Korean War aboard the aircraft carrier, Tarawa, surviving a plane crash at sea. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Mary Lee Pomponi, in 1960; his sister and brother-in-law, Lucy and Carl Pezzillo; and his dear cousin, Richie Pomponi, who checked on him daily in life and in death finally opened the door. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth A. Vucish Pomponi; his loving and devoted son, Bob Pomponi and wife, Emily, of Greensburg; the pride and joy of his life, his two granddaughters, Sofia and Lia Pomponi; sister, Evelyn (Bill) Willochell, of Greensburg; sister-in-law, Sherry (Fred) Culpepper, of Key West, Fla.; brother-in-law, Mike (Val) Vucish, of Deep Creek, Md.; aunt, Gertie Vucish, of Latrobe; loving niece, Carol Milsovic (Ron), of Monroeville; dear niece, Cari (JT) Simpson, of Greensburg; very special cousins, Martin (Kim) Shemansky, of Latrobe and Linda (Jim) Rennie, of Greensburg, who followed in their parents footsteps, always there to love, support and help in any way; his beloved extended family, Pat and Steve Stoklosa, of Blairsville; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Robert always felt lucky for the longtime friendships and help of Elvira and Steve Warylanka, of Irwin, neighbors, "his buddy" T.O. Gillespie and the "energizer bunny" Dolores Gillespie, both of Greensburg, as well as Renee McCleary, his sidekick, of New Alexandria. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Excela Hospice, The Arnold Palmer Center and the Community Health Center (especially Chelsea), for all of their loving support and care. Most importantly, the family wants to express their profound gratitude to Dr. Thomas Tomci and staff, Colleen and Brenda, for the many years of competent and compassionate care. Bob was confident that he was able to "stick around" as long as he did because of the care that he received.
Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate the life of Bob from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday in the CLEMENT L. PANTALONE FUNERAL HOME INC., 409 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, PA 15601, (724-837-0020). Parting prayers will be held at 9 a.m. Monday in the funeral home followed by a funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Grace Church. Interment will follow in Greensburg Catholic Cemetery.
