On Dec. 22, 2024, the world lost a great man who found joy in simplicity, devotion in family, and magic in the mundane. John A. Bensko, Jr., 81, of Crabtree, PA, born Feb. 12, 1943, quietly left this world the same way he lived in it – with dignity, love, and a subtle but undeniable imprint on the hearts of those fortunate enough to know him. John (aka Benny) was a man of few unnecessary words, but his actions and steady presence spoke volumes. His work at Latrobe Steel was a reflection of his work ethic and passion for providing for his family. To know John was to know the hum of a well-tuned engine, the crisp smell of fresh-cut grass, and the reassuring feeling of someone who could fix and tinker with just about anything. His love for all things mechanical meant no user manual ever escaped his meticulous review. Cars, including his treasured ‘79 red Corvette, were more than just machines to John – they were puzzles, companions, and expressions of ingenuity that he admired endlessly. He may have not remembered everyone by name but he would never forget what you drove. But if cars were his passion, his true north was his family. Benny’s life revolved around his beloved wife and best friend of 60 years, Patricia Ann. Their 58 year marriage wasn’t just a partnership; it was a symphony of quiet gestures, shared laughter, and unwavering support. Together, they wrote the kind of love story that most of us only witness in fleeting glimpses – the type that reminds you what commitment truly is. John is survived by Patty, their son and his wife (John & Christine), their daughter and her husband (Christine & Brett), and his cherished granddaughter Isabella. Each of them carries a piece of his warmth, his steady hand, sense of humor, and his unmatched ability to find beauty in the small things. Pap Pap could be found on spring and fall Saturdays at Carbon Field with Nana watching Isabella play softball wearing his Latrobe Airshow bucket hat while Isabella constantly watched for them in the stands. Immense love between the three of them - he’ll be watching from above. While Benny was a man who rarely sought attention, he had a subtle talent for drawing people in through shared fascination with the Weather Channel, American Picker’s latest episodes, new discoveries from the History or Discovery Channels or newfound interests in the latest gadgets. His charming enthusiasm had a way of making even the most ordinary conversation feel like a moment worth remembering. Those who knew John will remember him for his numerous stories reliving memories from the past from his days in the National Guard, experiences with characters at work (bolsters!), growing up with family (sisters Kathy, Linda and late sister Edna as well as brothers-in-crime… oops “law” Gabe and Rich), antics with family and friends during holidays, trips to the races, vacationing and home projects (shockingly some were injury free with most ending in damage and laughs). A Craftsman garden tractor lost a headlight due to a lawn dart, too many practical jokes to count, and family reunion sports gone awry. All represent a life well-lived. His legacy is a testament to the profound impact that simple, consistent love and dedication can have. In a world that often races ahead, John chose to appreciate each mile, each page, and each moment. And while the road ahead feels quieter without him, those who loved him will forever carry his example forward, finding solace in the little things that made John who he was. Drive on, Benny. And rest easy. Relatives and friends of John are invited to attend his funeral Mass to be celebrated Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in the in the St. Bartholomew Church, Crabtree with Fr. Justin Matro, OSB, celebrating. Everyone please go directly to the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Bartholomew Church PO Box A, Crabtree, PA 15624.
