On Sunday, February 23, 2025, Edward Carl Kohler of Latrobe, PA passed away at age 69. He was born April 25, 1955, in Bristol Township, PA to Otto Charles Kohler and Anna Mary Cecilia Cute Kohler. He spent his childhood in both Pennsylvania & Texas, graduating from McCallum High School in Austin, TX in 1973. He attended The University of Texas at Austin from 1974 to 1978, earning a B.A. in English & History.
A prolific musician and veteran of the Austin and Philadelphia music scenes, Edward (most often credited as Ed Cute) played in numerous musical outfits throughout his life, most notably from 1978 - 1983 as frontman for Eddie and the Inm’8s (later called the SKP’s) a regular act at Austin’s legendary punk club Raul’s. Other projects include Ex-Slax (‘84), The Burn (‘85), The Soul Twisters (‘86 - ‘88), The Dodge Brothers (‘91 -’93), Machine Dog (‘93 - 95’), The Gay Sportscasters (‘95) and Trigger Happy (‘98 - ‘02).
Ed held many professions in his life offstage. He worked as a typesetter, bartender, carpenter & cabinet maker, bookstore manager, & touring road manager (most notably for rockabilly band Stray Cats). In 2007, Ed transitioned to a new role as a project specialist for the College of Natural Sciences at UT Austin, servicing the facilities and laboratories located in the Patterson and Neural & Molecular Science buildings; A career which brought him many friends and interesting experiences. He retired in 2018, returning to Latrobe, PA where he had spent his early childhood.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include son Edward M. "Buster" Kohler, brothers Kevin & Otto and their families.
Immediate wishes are being handled by the family in Pennsylvania. A celebration of life is planned to take place in Austin, TX in the near future for friends & family.
